The entire story is set in an alternate fictional reality ruled by three superpowers.

The series’ plotline technically begins in the year 2010.

Son of the former Britannian Emperor Charles Zi Britannia and his royal consort Marianne vi Britannia, the boy lives in exile.

The history that led up to the boy’s exiled status is profound and dark in the political sense.

When Lelouch was still a baby, his mother Marianne was gruesomely killed. The boy’s sister, Nunnally vi Britannia, was the only real witness to the deed.

She was so traumatized that she lost her ability to walk as well as her eyesight.

The Britannian emperor who held fast to the country’s reins dispatched both his children, Lelouch and Nunnally, to Japan.

He made political envoys out of them in the hopes of placating Japan’s rising suspicions against the Empire.

In the meantime, the emperor was secretly prepping to invade Japan. Lelouch never forgot nor forgave his father for not finding his mother’s murderer and bringing them to justice.

When the invasion of Japan begins, the boy realizes his father’s true ambitions and grows enraged.

It is seven years before fans see a ‘Lelouch Lamperouge’ coming on the scene. The boy has grown into a young man and apparently changed his name.

He’s pursuing an education at Ashford Academy. Aloof and preoccupied, the brilliant Lelouch is always silently strategizing ways to overthrow the Empire.

It comes as no surprise that when a major terrorist attack occurs against the Empire, Lelouch is part of the radical group.

A girl called simply C. C. or C2 saves him from a Royal Britannian Guard.

This mysterious girl also grants him a supernatural ability. Called ‘Geass’, the ability grants Lelouch the ‘Power of Kings’.

He can command anyone to do anything, and they will be powerless to resist his word.

Lelouch wholeheartedly delves into his newfound Geass powers, aiming to use it to definitively turn the tide in Japan’s favor.

He remembers the promise he made to Suzaku, thus keeping his intentions from growing corrupt.

He rekindles his original desire to annihilate the Empire and bring his mother’s killer(s) to justice.

He dons a new identity, calls himself ‘Zero, wears a mask to stay secure, and establishes the radical ‘Black Knights’ group.

The Japanese people gradually understand and accept his resistance band.

The citizens soon start supporting and relying on the Black Knights to bring them freedom from the cruel Empire.

The wheels of war are thus set in motion, with Lelouch at the helm, his Knights shoring up his resolve, and the Japanese people inspiring his will.

Plenty of unpredictable changes take place along the way, including the shocking moment when Lelouch is left little choice but to fight his friend Suzaku – the selfsame Suzaku to whom he made a promise to rid Japan of the Empire’s machinations.

Lelouch also faces up against his half-sibling, to say nothing of the fact that he is constantly at war against the greatest army in the world intent on keeping the Holy Britannian Empire in power.

Official Announcements And Release Date For Code Geass Season 3

Neither Studio Sunrise nor any of the show’s affiliated partners/creators/producers have confirmed a season 3.

What they DID confirm, for 2021, is a series titled “Code Geass: Z of the Recapture”.

In the franchise so far we have an anime series “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion” with 2 seasons, a film trilogy (Initiation, Transgression, and Glorification), a new movie “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;surrection, and now a new series “Code Geass: Z of the Recapture” in the announcement.

We might not see any series come up this year anyway, so fans might need to hold on to hope for news in 2022. We are also waiting for blood lad season 2 and drifters season 2.

Suzaku Kururugi

He was promised freedom, for the Japanese people and the country itself, by Lelouch when the Britannian Prince-in-exile learned of his Empiric father’s plans to invade.

It was shocking and unsettling to see Suzaku join the Empire and earn the status of Honorary Britannian.

But he was never a ‘bad guy’, not by far. He tried to change the Empire from within, and fans saw that in the way Suzaku pursued justice and progressive governance even after his shift in allegiance.

He comes back to Lelouch and his cause, further adding to the development value of this character in the show.

Sadly, things turn dark between the boys. Suzaku blames Lelouch’s rebellion for the death of the girl he loved.

This makes Suzaku vow to kill him. SPOILER AHEAD! Fans witnessed slack-jawed when the season-2 finale revealed Lelouch insisting Suzaku to become ‘Zero’ by claiming the power of Geass from him.

Lelouch willingly accepts death to ensure this. What happens next is profound in so many ways, most certainly making Suzaku a central character in a possible season 3.

Kallen Stadtfeld

This character is important for two major reasons. She has one foot in Britannia and another in Lelouch’s resistance.

A Japanese turned Britannian, she was originally born ‘Karen Kouzuki’. Following the Empire’s occupation of Japan, she changed her name to ‘Kallen Stadtfeld’.

Her dual life, time spent at the Ashford Academy, and underground resistance activities as part of the Black Knights all make her a significant character with whom the show’s creators can work scripting magic if they so choose.
