Everything We Know So Far About Erased

Erased or Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi is a 13 episode TV anime that started airing from January 8, 2016, to March 25, 2016.

It is an anime adaptation of a manga series. The manga was written and illustrated by Sanbe Kei.

Sanbe Kei is also known for his works like “Mouryou no Yurikago” and “Hoozuki No Shima”.

Erased is another one of his Mystery, Psychological, Seinen series. The anime on the other hand was directed by Itou Tomohiko and animated by A-1 Pictures.

Itou has given his performance in shows like Death Note as assistant director and Millionaire Detective Balance as director.

A-1 Pictures has also portrayed their knack with bangers like Kaguya Sama, Anohana, and Your Lie In April.

So you can rest assured that the creators of Erased are professionals at work. For shows like Erased, high octane action animation isn’t the requirement.

Rather some sober, tranquil, and emotional visuals are what this series needs. So A-1 Pictures was a great choice since series like Your Lie In April fell under the same radar as Erased.

And the direction wasn’t a question as well because the psychological mystery theme of Erased was in the hands of Itou, the guy who is responsible for Death Note.

I don’t think I need to mention why his performance in Death Note made him a great selection for this series.

Now that we know about the background of the series, let’s take a look at the foreground.

For all of those readers who have kind of forgotten as to what Erased was about, here’s a summary for you.

No need to thank me. The story is about an aspiring mangaka named Satoru Fujinuma who has been struggling to make a living for himself.

He hints that his attempts to become better are being hurdled by his past. The incident that took place 18 years ago has influenced his life to a new degree.

Moreover, our boy isn’t a normal guy either. I mean, he is indeed a normal being like you and me.

It’s just that he has the ability to go back in time. He calls it “Revival”.

When something bad is about to happen, Revival kicks in and gives him a signal that he should avoid the bad thing from happening.

He then travels back a few seconds before something’s about to happen, figures it out, and tries to fix it.

However, his life turns upside down when his mother was killed by someone unknown. To save his mother, Satoru tries to use Revival but instead of traveling back a few seconds, he travels back 18 years and reaches his school days.

It was during these days that Satoru experienced the unthinkable. But is this unthinkable connected to his current life?

Was the reason for his mother’s murder, connected to his 18-year-old past? All these questions would be answered as you watch every episode that comes.

This is just trivia but Erased also had a live-action movie adaptation in 2016 and a live-action TV series adaptation in 2017.

So that sums it up and now I can be confident that we are on the same page.

Now that we know everything we have under the title of Erased, it is time to move on.

Let’s take a look at what season 2 has to offer. Or is season 2 ever going to happen in the first place or not.

Release dates, announcements, we are going to discuss it all. Let’s do it!

Official Announcements And Release Date Of Erased Season 2

As you guys know, official announcements and release dates are our prime source of confirming another season.

If we have an anime that is loved by fans and deserves a second season then creators might be up to it.

However, is that the same case with Erased? Did the creators show any notion towards the sequel?

Are there any official statements? Well, the answer is no. But Wait! Don’t dishearten yourself just yet.

There are plenty of opportunities for the creators to wake up someday and put up an official statement.

We never know. However, what we do know is the success, sales, and stance (alliteration intended) of Erased.

Based on that, we will try and figure out the chances of season 2.

Yup and this process of figuring out wouldn’t be fruitless at all. They would not only give you guys a vivid idea of the sequel’s chances but also tell you the reasons for the same.

Seems like a win-win situation to me. Shows like Vinland Saga and KonoSuba received anime adaptations after we posted our discussions about them.

And we had a positive notion towards both of those series in the articles as well.

We will begin our analysis with original source material from which the anime is adapted.

How many volumes of the source material are adapted and left out will give the idea about how many seasons can be produced.

More Source Material Information On Erased Season 2

The source material is an essential component in the making of another season. It’s the foundation that decides whether the series would even stand straight or not.

So to look out for the possibilities of a sequel, we need to know about the source material of Erased.

As you guys already know, Erased is an anime adaptation of a manga series. So let’s have a look at the manga with a bit more detailed eye.

Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi or Erased was written as well as illustrated by mangaka Kei Sanbe.

The manga started publishing on June 4, 2012, and concluded its publications on November 4, 2016.

The manga was serialized in Young Ace and fell under the genres of Psychological, Mystery, supernatural, and seinen.

There are a total of 49 chapters of Erased compiled in 9 volumes.

The anime adapted all the chapters/volumes of the manga. However, there were major alterations during the adaptation of Volume 6, 7, 8, and 9.

The series gave its own ending which wasn’t available in the manga. The ending in the manga was a lot more fleshed out one and we would discuss this point in detail, later in this article.

Coming back to the manga, the award catalog has also been quite favorable for this series.

It was nominated three consecutive times for the Manga Taisho Award. This happened during the 7th, 8th, and 9th occurrence of the same and it ranked 2nd, 4th, and 4th respectively.

Moreover, it was also nominated for the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize Reader Award. To add it up, the manga ranked 16th, 9th, and 10th in the Kono Manga Ga Sugoi! rankings (male) from 2014- 16.

The manga was also adapted into a Japanese live-action movie back on March 19, 2016, and a Netflix live-action TV series back on December 15, 2017.

The anime and the movie adaptation had alternate endings but the Netflix adaptation was the closest to the manga.

Moreover, a novel adaptation of Erased also took place which was handled by Hajime Ninomae.

I think this amount of trivial knowledge would be enough for us to have an understanding of the source material.

And based upon all of it, the most concerning aspect is none other than the fact that the manga has ended AND the anime adapted it completely.

If you guys don’t know, when a manga stops publishing, it puts a definite conclusion to the actual story.

Just like in the case of the KonoSuba light novel, the series has received a definite conclusion that can’t be altered.

So KonoSuba anime must know that there is an absolute ending within the story. But in the case of Erased, the situation is quite different.

As said earlier, the anime adapted all the volumes of the manga which means that there is no more content available for the creators to adapt.

In other words, Erased might never get a second season because we know that it has already concluded itself.

Wait! Don’t leave just yet. I want to remind you about a few series. Ever heard of Fruits Basket or Fullmetal Alchemist?

Yup, even after completing the series, the franchises made a return with a REMAKE.

In our case, the example that would fit in the best would be Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood because just like Erased, it changed the events of the manga to a certain degree.

The manga readers of any franchise are like the existing fanbase that is taken into consideration first.

So if you make an anime that doesn’t satisfy the manga readers then it’s a problem.

The source material fans might end up boycotting the series as well just how it happened with Classroom Of The Elite.

And to be honest, even though Erased anime wasn’t nearly as much criticized as Classroom Of The Elite, it was still subjected to it.

So if we want another installment from the franchise, we should hope more for a remake than a second season.

Because with no source material to cover, it’s horribly unlikely that creators would come up with an entirely new season that isn’t covered by Manga.

To be honest, if that happens, it wouldn’t be Erased anymore. It would turn into an original anime that follows its own story.

That covers it up, I suppose. Now is the time to look at the popularity of Erased to get an idea about its success.

Let’s go.

Expected Plot Of Erased Season 2

Now if Erased season 2 does take place, what will be the plot for it?

What is going to be the base story for the upcoming season? Well, the answer is rather complex.

As you guys know, the anime is an adaptation of its source material. This means that the core content for the series is taken from its source material aka Erased Manga.

Now as stated earlier, the manga has ended and the anime has adopted the entirety of the manga with alterations for the climax.

Therefore, from a logical point of view, it is impossible for Erased to be an “Adaptation” and bring a new plot to the table.

The thing is, the manga is concluded so season 2 can’t have anything new and fresh.

All that can be done is making a remake of the original series in a loyal manner.

This loyalty has to be shown to the source material and thus, the remake should have the same events in the manga being adapted.

In other words, the changed ending from the actual season should be trashed and the series should go for the actual ending.

If that happens, then the expected plot is more concentrated on the villain. I will try to explain the plot without falling too much into the spoiler territory but basically, the murderer waits for 15 years as Satoru wakes up.

Now they both go on a final chase where the murderer does his signature kidnapping and have one final face-off between him and Satoru.

Will Satoru be able to save this new life on the line or will the murderer triumph?

The mystery is yet to be solved and the plot is expected to revolve around the same.

If a remake does take place then the plot would be the same as the first 10 episodes and then, it would start with a final battle between killer and Fujinuma.

So that sums it up as the expected plot for the next part of Erased.

Now this expected plot would come into action when fans would watch the series. So let’s take a look at their reactions to know what they think about Erased season 2.

Why Do We Want A Second Season So Badly?

Another question that might summon up in your mind is why do people want another season of Erased so badly.

And the answer to that is simple. The story of Erased was so captivating that even after having a finite first season, people STILL want to enjoy more of Satoru and his search for truth.

The anime was an alluring experience so fans want to have it again but in the form of another installment rather than rewatching.

Many people are asking for a remake while many are asking for a sequel. Either way, fans want to enjoy the most from this series and that stays undeniable.

Ratings And Reviews Won So Far By Erased

Now let’s talk about the ratings and reviews gained by Erased. Positive responses on these aspects would leave a great impression on the series.

Which could potentially be used as a factor of judgment while deciding the sequel. So let’s have a look.

IMDb

The universally loved IMDb website has almost every medium of entertainment, including Erased. So let’s look at what viewers have to say about this series on this platform.

Alright boys, good news. The first season of Erased has been blessed with an incredible score of 8.5/10.

Oh yeah, I am happy as well. The reviews here are very positive highlighting the great direction and story presentation by the series.

The elements of emotions and rationality are portrayed beautifully. Thus, we can say that IMDb users are loving the series.

MyAnimeList

Now let’s look at the website used by hardcore anime fans, MyAnimeList. This is the website where weebs all around the world come together to talk about their favorite anime.

Let’s take a look at what fans have rated our beloved series. Just as you would expect, Erased has been given a fabulous score of 8.34/10 on MyAnimeList as well.

Reviews are positive as always however many reviews claim that the rush during the last couple of episodes significantly degraded the quality of the series.

But apart from that, Erased is undoubtedly an amazing watch as approved by IMDb and MAL.

Profit And Sales Details Of Erased Season 2

SALES! That’s an important word. Extremely important if you are talking about sequel making. If a series is making enough money, it is bound to get another season.

So if Erased makes a considerable amount of money, it will most likely get a sequel or a remake at the very least.

But did Erased actually make that much money?

Manga Sales

Manga sales help us to get an estimate of how much money a series might have made before/for its production.

In the case of Erased, it’s rather positive. The 8th volume of Erased had around 208,000 copies sold in just one week.

This made it the highest-selling manga of that week. Not to mention, by that time, the total sales seemed to have gone over 3 million.

That’s more than enough to make a season or 2.

Blu-Ray/Dvd Sales

Even though they are out of fashion now, Bluray sales are an important sector for an anime to earn money.

If we talk about Erased, it had total sales of 3,332 for its second volume which is a great number.

That’s because the Bluray discs are not bought much by the viewers. So a number as low as 3000 is worth talking about.

Live-Action And Netflix Series

The live-action adaptation of Erased had a great collection of ¥1.4 billion. Although it isn’t even 1% of the highest-grossing Japanese film ever, it is still a great number.

Not to mention, the Erased Netflix adaptation was also streamed widely across Japan which goes to show how popular and successful this series is.

Overall, the Erased franchise has earned more than enough money to support a sequel or remake.

It has been popular for a while and had amazing sales during that time frame.

Famous Characters To Reappear In Erased Season 2

If Erased does end up having another installment, which characters can we expect to make a reappearance?

Well, the answer is everyone. From Satoru to Hiromi, from Kayo to Sachiko, Erased is bound to get its entire cast back.

There would be a few more introductions if the remake follows the source material but I won’t spoil you on those.

Overall, you can rest assured that all of your favorite characters would be back in the next remake of Erased.

Other Decisive Factors For Erased Season 2

Now let’s quickly talk about 2 important factors that we haven’t discussed yet. These factors can be decisive in the making or breaking of a series.

Ending Of Erased Season 1

The ending of Erased was pretty simple. The killer got caught thanks to Satoru and Fujinuma gained popularity as a mangaka.

In other words, his life got on track after such a horrible incident. However, something worth noting here is the fact that the anime doesn’t have an opening for the next season.

In other words, there is no room for the next season which is exactly why many fans, including me, are expecting more of an Erased remake than season 2.

Season 1 got a definite conclusion but it wasn’t as impactful as it is in the manga.

So a remake would be much better than a sequel because of the ending of Season 1.

Controversy Around Erased

One last thing that should be addressed here is the controversy around Erased anime. The one controversial topic that summoned up under the cap of Erased was its ending.

Viewers dislike the fact that the series went too fast to conclude itself. The actual ending was much more fleshed out and engaging.

Thus, fans wanted to experience the actual ending instead of an anime-only one. This controversy might not be ground-breaking but it is still worth noting.

If anything, this should portray the importance of a remake for the franchise.

Conclusion

Well, that’s about it weebs. That was Everything You Needed To Know About Erased Season 2 In 2021.

Overall, the series is more inclined to get a remake if it ever gets renewed.

Fans would love it and it would gain popularity yet again. I hope you had a fun team examining this analysis.

Thanks a lot for reading and until next time, Sayonara.
