Makoto is extremely friendly and tolerant even if he is a little sometimes naive. He’s friendly, polite and more laid-back than the others. These traits might be the reason that he is able to engage and become friends with even his most abrasive students in free Time.
Junko is known as Makoto as a “herbivore guy,” which means that Makoto is more probably the most passive person in a relationship. This is reflected in his interactions with people. Makoto can be a little jittery sometimes and is somewhat pushy. However, despite these weaknesses He is capable of being a ferocious and engaging speaker.
Makoto Naegi is an avid believer in the power of hope and a positive outlook towards the future, no matter how difficult the situation may be at the moment. He isn’t a fan of despair, believing that it can be a negative and corrupting emotion that does not benefit humanity, he is extremely compassionate towards people who have fallen into despair, believing that they may have been victims to Junko and not necessarily evil.
It seems that the one person Makoto truly likes Junko Enoshima. She is the True Ultimate Despair. He regards her as his adversary and blames Junko along with her character, Monokuma, for the deaths of his buddies as they played his participation in the Killing Game. But, in her case, he believed that death was not necessary and attempted to convince her as she was getting ready to commit suicide. Junko refused to listen , and killed herself regardless.

It is interesting to note that, unlike talent, Makoto being the Ultimate Hope isn’t acknowledged at Hope’s Peak Academy, but rather was awarded for beating Junko who is the True Ultimate Despair. In contrast to Izuru Kamukura, whose Ultimate Hope comes from him being the epitome of ability, Makoto’s Ultimate Hope comes from his remarkable confidence and determination. Makoto even expresses his appreciation for.
Being the Ultimate Hope, Makoto proves to be immune to Junko’s tricks, which are designed to cause people to fall into despair. Together with his luck, Makoto’s success is hard for Junko to understand, it leads her to abandon him as if he were to challenge her, it could be depressing as a whole. The talent of Makoto helped his victory over Junko by filling the five participants with hope when they were in despair at discovering the situation they found themselves in. Class 78th:
Kyoko Kirigiri
Their relationship through their school days isn’t entirely clear. After being brainwashed, their bonds were formed after the events that led to the first investigation. Kyoko was the person who informs Makoto that there were more to Sayaka’s death than the public was believed to be. Thanks to her words that Makoto was able to unravel the mystery surrounding his deceased friend’s death. Later, she comforts him regarding the incident, stating that Sayaka was reluctant to execute her plan action to kill him. She she gave her (and later him) the evidence required to resolve the mystery. Since then, they remain in good standing and she assists him in his arguments during trials. Makoto calls her an acquaintance and would like that she could be as trusting as he trusts her and she starts to believe in other people.
In the course during the trial in which Kyoko is accused of this crime Naegi Makoto detects contradictions in Kyoko’s claim. He remains silent and trusts Kyoko. In the end, he is being indicted for the offence at hand. Makoto is compelled to take an indictment, but is spared due to Alter Ego. She realises that she was focused on her own needs and not the security of the sole person who trusted her. This is why she puts her life at risk to help him. She then held him in her hand swollen and swollen, which is a signal of her confidence because she claims that she only holds her hands to people who she considers to be family. It is accompanied by other subtle indications that she feels romantic for him.
After joining the Future Foundation, Kyoko becomes Makoto’s chief. Makoto is constantly ensuring Kyoko isn’t too busy with her duties and Kyoko is in turn, says she’ll utilize her power to defend Makoto. Kyoko is still awed by his enthusiasm, and Makoto also appreciates her cool persona and believes she’s the one who kept him alive.
When you watch Danganronpa 3, it becomes clearer that the two are in love for one another, particularly evident in Makoto’s more reserved behavior and her tendency to blush more frequently. In the game of collaboration between Danganronpa 3 and Guns Girl Z in which Kyoko gets accused of being reserved that even Makoto cannot find her adorable and he responds reluctantly, but asserts that he actually does consider her adorable, which is a surprise to Kyoko, and makes her blush. In the game of killing when Makoto listens to Kyoko discussing him with Ryota Mitarai Makoto gets in dismay at Kyoko’s speech, while Kyoko stumbles around in a trance when she realizes that he was listening to her.
At the same time, Kyoko takes off her gloves and holds her hand to help him feel better, and Makoto can be seen imitating Kyoko’s thought process at the same time. Within the Otomedia Magazine, Makoto is asked who is the first name that pops into his head when he thinks of the autumn season. Makoto responds Kyoko because she’s cool, yet she also has a very friendly and warm side. He then tries to clarify that he does not intend to do that in a strange manner and then tries to alter the conversation by saying that her birthday falls in October. This makes it appear more suspect and he defends his position by saying that the birthday of his friends birthday… but then not be able to identify Yasuhiro’s birthday when confronted and then laughing nervously in the hope that he’s forgotten. 8. Aoi is also conscious that they both like one another, giggling wildly following Kyoko’s speech, and then watching the two smiling with a smile, appearing to be supportive of the two.
But, Makoto Naegi ends up unintentionally trigger Kyoko’s NG code during Kyoko’s Final Killing Game, as Kyoko’s NG code was able to pass four times, keeping Makoto still alive. Makoto was shocked and deeply saddened by Kyoko’s alleged death, and blamed himself for letting her go to die. However, her final words of encouragement gave Makoto only a tiny bit of optimism and her alleged death spurred him to put an end to what he called the Final Killing Game. Even though he tried to be as if Kyoko was dead, Makoto is seen crying about her , even while reminiscing about his experiences with her at his close companionship. After being brainwashed he relived that he was the “ghosts” that were Kyoko along with Sayaka. After Makoto was in a fight with Kyosuke it was implied by Makoto the fact that Makoto loved Kyoko. In an attempt to convince Kyosuke to assist her, Makoto tearfully tells him that even if Kyoko was to have been in despair and he had no other choice other than to kill her, Makoto would be content to have had the pleasure of meeting Kyoko.
Following the time that Mikan brought back Kyoko, Naegi Makoto was very content to see Kyoko again. Makoto and Kyoko were last seen at the newly rebuilt Hope’s Peak Academy together.
In Danganronpa IF, Junko calls Kyoko “Mukuro’s love rival” due to Mukuro’s crush on Makoto, attempting to turn Mukuro against Kyoko. The story isn’t clear the question of whether Kyoko was truly attracted by Makoto or if that was simply one of the many lies Junko tells.
Dans Danganronpa’s Bonus feature Ultimate Talent Development Plan, Makoto speaks to her in an attempt to resolve her problems concerning her father. Although the two are very close however, they are portrayed as a friendship instead of romance.

Sayaka Maizono
Before they entered Hope’s Peak Academy, Naegi Makoto and Sayaka went to middle school together, but had a difficult relationship due to their having different standards of socialization. Sayaka later admits that she had always wanted to contact Makoto after seeing him nurse an injured crane into health when it became lost and was stuck in the water at the school they attended. Unfortunately, they wound at graduation without having contact.
It’s widely speculated that Makoto was a fan of Sayaka from middle school. It appears to be a superficial first crush since Makoto doesn’t even know her until that point however he admiring her from a distance. He believes Sayaka is gorgeous and, according to Makoto Naegi’s Secret File and Makoto Naegi Secret File, he was impressed by her performance after she became a celebrity. After they first met at the high school years, they appear to be close and can be often seen together on Danganronpa 3 – Despair Arc. In another of their photos from high school, Makoto seems to be watching Sayaka while the class was swimming.
In during the Killing School Life, Sayaka was able to recognize Makoto Naegi immediately and became friends with Makoto right away and began to befriend him. An attraction developed between them and she even regarded herself as Makoto’s “assistant.” He was extremely impressed with her and silently commented on her beautiful features every when she smiled. They were friends and she confessed to him that she’d go to any lengths to ensure she could defend and protect her idol group members. After seeing the shocking video showing her peers disbanding the idol group , and sitting on stage crying, Sayaka had an emotional meltdown. Makoto quickly came to help her, and promised to take herself out of her school, no regardless of what was required. Makoto took care of her to allow her to borrow his room , even though she was terrified of sleeping in her own bed. In the morning following she was absent, Makoto goes looking for her concerned about the situation the state she had been in. After finding her body in the toilet, he became shocked and let out an exaggerated scream, and then falling unconscious in shock.
After discovering the truth of the class trial and realizing that Sayaka profited from his compassion and tried to smear him, Makoto feels betrayed; However, he grieves over her passing because she was a close friend. Kyoko soothes Makoto and informs him that it’s very likely Sayaka had written her last message to Makoto in her mind and exposing her killer in order and apologizing for what she did. Makoto says that she might have been trying to get revenge on her murderer. It’s not clear if this is the case or not, however in his interview with Kyoko after the trial Makoto speaks of Sayaka one more time in his conversation, claiming that his intuition was as a result of his being psychic, and refusing to believe it was an omen following.
In the next game, Naegi Makoto used the 11037 number to protect the remaining students. It was the number that Sayaka utilized to keep Makoto from being blamed as the culprit in the previous trial. Makoto was later able to explain why for setting 11037 as the code was because a individual (Sayaka) left the number behind in order to protect him from the wrath of society, which proved that Makoto believed in Kyoko’s theory and cherished her as an old friend. It is likely because Makoto recovered his memory and recalled his friendship with Sayaka.
In the animated version of the video game Makoto appears to be frequently smiling in the company of Sayaka as well as the chart of his relationship confirms his love on Sayaka. But, the chart doesn’t mention that she likes his back, though it’s been suggested that she is.
The film Danganronpa 3 – Future Arc the character of Sayaka’s “ghost” was seen to Makoto along with Kyoko’s “ghost,” after he was brainwashed and set the suicide route. Based on the voice of Sayaka’s actor her character’s appearance was meant to be “a person who was thinking about his first love just prior to dying,” and thus she did not have an unsettling voice.
in Danganronpa IF, when Makoto begins to recover his memories, Makoto thinks that, more than anything else, he needs to defend Sayaka. When he becomes down, Sayaka drops her canon plan to frame him and then spends all night nursing him instead. She’s also shown to be ashamed of her actions and guilt over her betrayal. It’s also been noted that when Makoto was wounded while protecting Mukuro, Sayaka was the first person to scream.
The game Danganronpa V3 bonus mode Ultimate Talent Development Plan, Sayaka prepares a meal for Makoto who is a fan. They then discuss the past and would like to be more together.

Their bond is also evident in the scene where Aoi is seen feeling guilt for having killed Makoto and then she is happy when he accepts her apology.
As part of the Future Foundation, the two have become much closer. Makoto ensures that Aoi does not overdo things, while Aoi often assures him that everything is in order. If Makoto is detained for treason, Aoi’s Future Foundation, Aoi (along with Kyoko) assists in his defense and also assists Makoto escape from Kyosuke when Kyosuke tries to murder Kyosuke. Also, Makoto provides Aoi hope when she is depressed at the thought that they have to start the process of killing again.
Makoto stays with Aoi throughout his time in the Final Killing Game, and she assists him in escaping away from Kyosuke and Juzo several times. In addition, Makoto always relies on Aoi and is grateful for the assistance she’s provided her. However, Makoto worries for her security, especially when she is trying to battle Juzo despite being handicapped due to the NG code.
Makoto and Aoi are shown that they can communicate with one another when murder or deaths occur in the past, but not before the events of Killing School Life. The way Makoto perceives Aoi’s emotional side is the reason why he was able to derail her plans to get the murders carried out in Chapter 4. The Final Killing Game, when Kyoko appears to die, Aoi fears that Makoto will become reckless and hurt himself even though Makoto insisting that he would not let Kyoko’s sacrifice go unnoticed.
They also support each other in times of crisis when these incidents take place. When Kazuo is killed at the hands of Kyosuke, Aoi gives Makoto assistance and encourages him to keep going like she did. After having a conversation in the presence of Komaru, Makoto realizes that they might have brought back Aoi of her brother who died, Yuta, who was Aoi’s captive and therefore the closest person to her before The Tragedy. Makoto appeared to be trying to console his friend, however the latter was not able to do that as his conversation with Komaru was disrupted by Miaya who revealed her robotic character.
In The Final Killing Game, some of Aoi’s facial expressions suggest that she’s aware Makoto and Kyoko have a lot in common and that she is content for them.
Following that the tragic events in The Tragedy have been resolved, Makoto, Aoi, together with the other survivors decide to build Hope’s Peak Academy in conjunction.
Byakuya Togami
Makoto Naegi believed that Byakuya’s talent was as being exceptional because of being the ultimate Prodigy with the Affluence. Byakuya frequently acted coldly toward Makoto when they first met, beginning at the introduction, similar to all the other players, something Makoto did not like, though not outrightly. However, Makoto acted friendly to Byakuya as well as everybody else, avoiding his comments about him to his own.
In the Byakuya’s Free Time events, when Makoto demonstrated his talent to Byakuya and Byakuya, he viewed Makoto as a dull commoner and Makoto considered to be being too much. Makoto tried to comprehend Byakuya and realized that they were completely different. Makoto tried unsuccessfully to convince Byakuya the idea that a regular lifestyle was fine for Makoto. Similar to that, Byakuya used Makoto to attempt to discover what the mind of the majority of people. At the end of the day, Byakuya disliked Makoto’s philosophy and was even willing to speak with him about his life however, he stated that they would never ever be friends. Makoto realized that they were completely different and began to get to know his perspective.

In the last class trial, Makoto helped rescue Byakuya from the despair of Junko. While Byakuya claims that he doesn’t require Makoto’s help He was probably lying.
Danganronpa 2: Danganronpa 2, Byakuya cooperated in Makoto’s scheme, allowing him to save the remnants of despair. Byakuya was in agreement with Makoto’s decision.
in Danganronpa Another Episode, Byakuya mentions to Komaru that she reminds him of Makoto at the time Byakuya first had a conversation with Makoto and Makoto, which indicates that Byakuya appreciates Makoto more now that she has seen the incidents of Danganronpa.
The story of Danganronpa 3, Byakuya tells Makoto that He “was just as tough as a cockroach and equally difficult for a killer,” and that he would not want them to be enemies. Aoi claimed that Byakuya tried in order to help Makoto feel better as Makoto was then thrown into another game of killing.
Toko Fukawa
Naegi Makoto has a difficult time trying to communicate with Toko most likely due to her personality of being antisocial as well as the fact Toko can be extremely accusatory. Toko has expressed her displeasure with Makoto and has said she is not a fan of him, yet often believes that he is trustworthy. Makoto and Toko endure through the Killing School Life together, and are able to join the Future Foundation (although Toko is not an official member).

Mondo and Kiyotaka argue over who has the more power and they both challenge one another to a endurance competition at the sauna. Mondo asks Makoto to testify for them to ensure an even contest, which will show that the latter may now believe in Makoto more since his actions in the initial class trial, in which his innocence was established.
At Mondo’s Free Time events he requested Makoto join his gang following their escape from Hope’s Peak Academy. Makoto isn’t sure if it’s safe. Mondo declared that Makoto could accompany him on his bike and he is confident in Makoto and considers him to be an intimate friend. Mondo is also in contact with Makoto specifically about his uncertainty about his career choice which he said he wouldn’t share with anyone else, which demonstrates the progress of their friendship.
In Chihiro’s last free time competition, Makoto recommended Mondo as his trainer.
Makoto is able to identify Mondo as the perpetrator of Chihiro’s death. After learning about the motives of Mondo for murdering Chihiro, Makoto started to be a bit guilty and became angry when Mondo was sentenced to execution.
Kiyotaka Ishimaru
Kiyotaka appears to treat Makoto with respect or at the very least, with respect as a fellow student and classmate. At Kiyotaka’s Free Time Events, their relationship grows closer when Makoto is able to help Kiyotaka as well as his skills in making friends. Celestia was quite attracted to Makoto and was interested to check if his luck as Makoto, the Ultimate Lucky Student could beat her luck as the ultimate gambler.
At The Free Time Events, when Celestia is completing her personal score, she scored Makoto with a C-rank, which is more than any of her fellow students. Although Makoto believes that Celestia as a friend, she is scared by her luck and thinks she could have someone murdered if she believed they were boring. This caused Makoto to think that she’s an acquaintance he has to take care of.

Makoto is the only to acknowledge her smile. This resulted in her developing a close friendship with Mukuro. When she appeared in Danganronpa Zero, she rescued Makoto, saying she did it because they are acquaintances.
At Danganronpa IF, Makoto treated her with kindness and put his trust in her even when it was discovered that she was the primary culprit for the events that had occurred at Hope’s Peak Academy.
In addition, Makoto doesn’t seem to think of Mukuro in the same way as the other class 78th (after his memory was erased) in the sense that after watching the brainwashing video Mukuro wasn’t among the other classmates who appeared before him. It could be that she is seen, as Junko who was not a victim of the game, or simply because the man is unable to remember her appearance or character because of the brainwash and does not believe that she was killed to aid in for the escape plan of him as well as the others who survived.

Future Foundation Members:
Kyosuke Munakata
Makoto Naegi is Kyosuke’s main opponent in his quest to end Ultimate Despair. Due to Kyosuke’s position of vice-leader, he was in bringing charges against Makoto with Treason in the face of Future Foundation and continues to berate him. Instead of just scolding Makoto, Kyosuke is in favor of the execution of Makoto along with his fellow Remnants of Despair.
Contrary to whatever his behavior may suggest, Kyosuke admits to Makoto that he believes that he is exceptional, not just because he played a role in his defeat against Junko Enoshima. Kyosuke admires Makoto’s charisma as well as his determination even in the face of unimaginable challenges; qualities that were frequently displayed during the live broadcast of the Killing School Life. Makoto claims that they have earlier been close acquaintances.
Yet, Kyosuke is consistently at opposition to Makoto because their views are very distinct. Makoto is a believer in only optimism, while Kyosuke believes in the power of. This is why Kyosuke believes that Makoto’s ideas are empty and unimportant because he doesn’t think of despair the same as he values the possibility of hope. According to Kyosuke Makoto’s experiences with his involvement in the Killing Games pales in comparison to the Future Foundation’s fight in a world that has no rules or limitations on the depths to which forces of Despair are able to sink to crush hope. Kyosuke is also concerned about how powerful Makoto is, since he doesn’t want him to convince people that they can prevail against despair, without fighting.
The end result is that Kyosuke’s animosity to Naegi Makoto is an uneasy clash of ideas on how to best reverse the harm done to this planet through Ultimate Despair. Kyosuke declares that he will stop despair at any costs, even if despair was caused by someone he loved dearly. But, Makoto managed to remind Kyosuke not to forget about his loved ones (In this instance, Chisa) and Kyosuke changed his mind. Kyosuke agreed to join with Makoto however, he isn’t sure about him despite Makoto believing in him completely.
Kazuo Tengan
In the beginning, Makoto Naegi had a great amount of respect for Kazuo. He was extremely grateful to Kazuo for his defense and then blamed himself for his actions after the murder of Kyosuke. Makoto was shocked to learn that Kazuo was the mastermind of The Final Killing Game, but did not appear to hold an animus towards him or see Kazuo as a threat.
Great Gozu
Great Gozu is awestruck by Makoto for his confidence even in the face of hardship and has believed that since watching him appear on his show Killing School Life for the first time. He regards Makoto as the kind of hopeful character that the Future Foundation needs, and has fought to protect Makoto from Kyosuke because of that.
Juzo Sakakura
Juzo is a fervent fan towards Makoto Naegi and is frequently incapable of looking at or hear Makoto’s name without showing his displeasure. Juzo’s dislike for Makoto was evident for a long time before Makoto did something he was not supposed to do and was able to hide Makoto from the Remnants of Despair. in Danganronpa Gaiden: Killer Killer, Juzo is shown to be a hater of Makoto enough that he demanded Makoto’s ex- Super High School Level Make-up Artist create a fake corpse in his image. This was then used to infiltrate the Killing Festival and “murdered” to impress the crowd. When the Make-up Artist laughed and asked whether Juzo would fight the fake corpse, he replied that Makoto was no good.
Juzo is adamant that Makoto is considered to be a “hero,” and mockingly calls him such. Juzo doesn’t believe Makoto is worthy of being called hero-like, in light of the lives that his actions have either directly or indirectly sacrificed. Another reason for his resentment are the conflicting views of Makoto and the problems that Makoto brought to Kyosuke. But, it was realized that Juzo was averse to Makoto because of the fact that he was strong enough to beat Junko and defeat Junko, something Juzo himself was unable to do and blames himself for.
Juzo is later able to save the brainwashed Makoto from suicide and reveals the motives behind his hate for him. Makoto is determined to inform the victim that Kyosuke was manipulated and that’s why he tried to kill him. He then convincing Kyosuke that Juzo still loves him and that he ought to go to Juzo.
